There are 1,440 minutes in a day. During a busy day of meetings, errands and appointments, the span of a minute hardly seems like enough time to get anything done. This past year we learned how to value the time we are given and began to practice how we could easily make a minute matter during a busy day. You can take a minute to make yourself a fresh cup of coffee, make your bed, respond to that email you’ve been putting off, or simply tell someone you love them. You can take a minute to close your eyes and relax for a moment. Far too often we take spare minutes for granted, not recognizing them as pockets of peace throughout the day. Family Abuse Center has taught me how a minute can drastically change another’s life. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States, equaling more than 10 million women and men a year. Numbers play a critical part in domestic violence awareness, but these victims are more than just a number to us. We watch shattered lives rebuild during the time in the shelter. Join us in the fight against domestic violence by making the next minute matter. We’re looking forward to bringing back our annual fundraiser next fall, but until then, The Bernard and Audre Rapoport Foundation has graciously given Family Abuse Center a matching grant. Starting now, every dollar you donate will be matched up to $25,000, raising $50,000 in total! You can contribute by mail or online at our website by clicking the donate button at the top right corner of this page. Minute to minute, dollar to dollar, these things make a difference in the battle to eliminate domestic violence. Help support Family Abuse Center as we take precious time to create a space and offer services to support victims of domestic violence. We are so thankful for the support we have received over the years and can’t wait to bring back Dancing with the Waco Stars!
Family Abuse Center is hosting their Annual Domestic Violence Conference on October 30, 2015. This all day training will be held at the Baylor Law School, 1114 S. University Parks Dr., Waco. Legal and Criminal Justice professionals as well as Social Work professionals are encouraged to attend and receive continuing education credit. Check in begins at 8:00 am. More than 256 volunteers joined Family Abuse Center staff to build a playground in one day. KaBoom organized the event and Blue Cross Blue Shield paid for the playground equipment. It was a true festive occasion that even the cold could not dampen. The DJ played upbeat music. Blanek’s Catering provided the lunch and many other businesses donated food. We all ate well and stayed warm working hard.
Tomorrow December 18, 2013 will be play day. It will be the first day that our kids actually get to climb and swing on the playground. They can’t wait. There are no words adequate to say thank you to KaBoom, Blue Cross Blue Shield and all those wonderful volunteers.
Today Barnett Contracting brought in some equipment and a couple of wonderful workers. With help from Manna Works, they removed the old playground and leveled the ground so that our site is ready for the new playground. The Build Day for the new custom designed playground will be December 14. To volunteer to help, contact firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you Barnett Contracting!
Imagine putting together an entire playground in just one day. Thanks to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Family Abuse Center will get a new playground for the kids at the shelter on December 14. The day will begin with a rally and then more than 250 volunteers will spend their Saturday building the playground.
By 2 p.m. in the afternoon, we will dedicate the playground. Sadly we can play on it until the concrete dries, but we can still celebrate this new structure. Research repeatedly shows that imaginative play is essential to all kids. Families living at the shelter live in close quarters with many different folks around all the time. What a great place to have a state of the art, custom designed playground!
Join us by volunteering for that day. Contact Amy Reagan (email@example.com) to sign up to help.
