Part time Resident Advocate

Position Status: Part – Time

FLSA: non-exempt (hourly)

Supervised by: Shelter Manager

GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE: The Family Abuse Center depends on the Resident Advocates to ensure that our shelter is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The primary responsibilities of the Resident Advocates (RA) are to provide crisis intervention and referrals on the 24-hour crisis line and provide resident assistance to those in the 24-hour shelter. R.As approve admission to FAC in accordance with policies and procedures, provide front desk coverage (answering incoming calls, assisting residents at front desk, etc.) in between hotline calls as needed, provides shelter intakes to incoming shelter residents and help clients move and settle into shelter. Other duties include crisis intervention, meal preparation, maintaining client records, and ensuring confidentiality.

Current Need: Must be available overnight shifts, weekends, and over the holidays.

Education • High School Diploma or GED Experience • 1-2 years experience in the field of Domestic and/or Sexual Violence preferred, or the same amount of residential services experience • Experience in social or human service field (domestic violence, sexual violence) preferred. Skills/Abilities • Strong oral and written communication skills • Strong organizational skills • Ability to problem solve and diffuse conflict under pressure • Demonstrate experience and ease working with a diverse population of clients • Ability to handle crisis situations with sensitivity and assertiveness • Demonstrates effectiveness as a member of a team as well as the ability to work independently and to take initiative • Flexibility and ability to prioritize job responsibilities • Ability to maintain personal balance and accomplish multiple tasks that require a variety of skills • Demonstrates skills of self-direction • Light clerical duties • Ability to maintain accurate data and documentation of client services • Provide and receive supervision • Work in basic computer programs such as MS Word & Excel. • Bilingual a plus. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Provide direct services to survivors of domestic violence. • Maintain Shelter Programming Statistics and Documentation. • Maintain a secure, clean, and respectful shelter location and work environment. • Maintain communication with case management team and other shelter staff. • Believe in and act in accordance with the agency’s mission statement and goals . • Document all client services. • Serving some meals, and managing the kitchen in the evening and weekends. • Cleaning as required. • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Navarro County Bilingual Legal Advocate – Part time

Position Status: Part – time Legal Advocate

FLSA: non-exempt (hourly)

Supervised by: Director of Outreach and Legal Advocacy

GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE: The Rural Advocate will provide advocacy services to clients who are domestic violence survivors in Navarro county and assist as they navigate through criminal justice and victim assistance processes and programs. This position will also be responsible for increasing awareness of Family Abuse Center and services available to survivors of domestic violence. A significant amount of travel in Navarro county will be required.

QUALIFICATIONS: The qualifications listed below are representative of the education, experience, skill/ability, and licenses/credentials required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Pre-law, or Social Service, or equivalent combination of skills and experience • Master’s degree preferred

Experience • 1-3 years experience in the field of domestic and/or sexual violence helpful • Knowledge of criminal and civil proceedings • Experience working with diverse people and groups • Experience working for systemic changes in the community • Demonstrated effectiveness in working as both a leader and a team member

Skills/Abilities • Fluency in both English and Spanish required • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Strong organizational skills • Ability to maintain accurate data and documentation of client services • Demonstrates experience and ease working with a diverse population of clients • Demonstrates effectiveness as a member of a team, as well as the ability to work independently • Ability to resolve conflict and demonstrate crisis intervention skills • Provide and receive supervision • Strong sense of self-direction and initiative • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Products and other basic computer programs

RESPONSIBILITIES: • Provide direct services to victims of family violence including, but not limited to, court accompaniment, assistance with filing for protective orders and crime victim’s compensation, crisis intervention, safety planning, emergency legal advocacy, basic case management, and information and referral regarding other local resources. • Office is located in Navarro County, but travel will be required in Navarro county to meet directly with clients and partner agencies • Provide community education and training to rural communities and the criminal justice system to help identify victims of family violence and provide or refer them to needed services • Develop working relationships with law enforcement personnel, community agencies, faith-based organizations, district attorney, judges, medical professionals, volunteers, and other entities that work with or encounter victims of family violence • Believe in and act in accordance with the agency’s mission statement and goals • Experience working with diverse population and groups. • Document all client services as well as community outreach work • Write routine reports, correspondence and appropriate case notes. • Complete other duties as assigned by supervisor
