SUMMARY OF POSITION           

The goal of Prevention is to develop and implement a community-based prevention and awareness project at health care facilities, schools, and civic organizations in the Family Abuse Center service area. Prevention provides community outreach through trainings, tabling events and educational exercises. The Prevention Intern will provide assistance to the Prevention Advocate in carrying out community outreach efforts. 

TIME REQUIREMENTS

  • Fall 2024 semester
  • Monday - Thursday
  • About 10 – 20 hours per week; subject to change based on number of events
  • FAC Staff Meetings first Wednesday of the month at 2 pm (Optional)
  • Occasional weekends depending on scheduled activities
  • Occasional evenings depending on scheduled activities
  • Biweekly check-in with Volunteer Coordinator

Education/Experience:      

  • Junior or Senior preferred
  • Child and Family Studies, Education, Public Health, Communications, and/or related fields
  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care

Skills/Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience and ease working with a diverse population of clients
  • Ability to handle sensitive topics with clarity and understanding
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrates effectiveness as a member of a team as well as the ability to work independently and to take initiative
  • Flexibility and ability to prioritize job responsibilities 
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback
  • Ability to accomplish multiple tasks that require a variety of skills  
  • Ability to maintain accurate data and document outreach efforts 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Canva
  • Public speaking
  • Bilingual preferred

License/Credentials:

  • Valid Texas Driver's License and clear driving record. 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PREVENTION INTERN:

  • Assist the Prevention Advocate at tabling events, trainings, and educational exercises
  • Prepare event materials in advance 
  • Represent the agency at community meetings and events alongside the Prevention Advocate
  • Aid in implementing an evaluation process for projects and outreach events
  • Help maintain and establish new community partnerships
  • Assist in maintaining records and imputing data
  • Assist Prevention Advocate in further developing presentations and curriculum
  • Coordinate with other departments as needed to ensure seamless communication
  • Identify and organize Prevention team goals
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Prevention Advocate
