Legal Advocacy Volunteers
Legislative Volunteer
Volunteer will research new legislation regarding family violence victims, offenders and witnesses, and any other piece of legislation relevant to Family Abuse Center (FAC). Identify what legislation says, what it means, how it works, and how to make sure the applicable people are aware of it.
Key skills/abilities include:
- Interest in legislative process and policy
- Ability to critically think about impact of policy on clients, staff, and others
- Ability to communicate clearly with law enforcement, court officials, and others who need to be made aware of policy changes, if applicable
- Ability to work independently

Legal Advocacy Volunteer
Volunteer will assist residential and non-residential clients with filling out Protective Order (PO) questionnaires and Crime Victim Compensation (CVC) applications.
Key skills/abilities include:
- Ability to communicate with victims in a professional/empathic manner
- Knowledge surrounding legal system (training available)
- Knowledge of PO’s and CVC (training available)

Court Accompanier
Volunteer will accompany victim to court for PO hearings, custody, divorce hearings, etc. Volunteer will not accompany clients alone, and a FAC staff member will always be present.
Key skills/abilities include:
- Professional appearance/manner
- Interest in court process
- Knowledge surrounding legal system (training available)
- Ability to communicate with victims in a professional/empathic manner

Legal Researcher
Volunteer will research legal issues in a variety of areas:
- Legal barriers and resources for undocumented victims
- Legal barriers and resources for victims with disabilities
- Population-specific barriers for GLBTQI victims and response of the legal system
- How legal system treats victim-offenders
Key skills/abilities include:
- High level of independence/initiative
- Interest in topic

Policy Advocacy
Volunteer has the option to investigate current and relevant legislation at local, state, and national levels, distribute information in community, and within funding restrictions, participate in lobbying activities with staff.
Key skills/abilities include:
- High level of independence
- Interest in policy
- Capable of researching legislation
- High level of critical thought
- Ability to remain within funding restrictions for non-profit
- Ability to speak only on relevant issues, in support of victim and advocate rights, without lobbying on behalf of other issues
- Ability to communicate clearly with other advocates, policy analysts, and community members

Administrative Assistant
Volunteer will help with clerical duties including: filing, shredding, copying brochures, ordering pamphlets and other resources. Volunteer may also help with rural work.
Key skills/abilities include:
- Ability to communicate clearly with staff and other professionals
- Ability to carry out tasks as assigned
