As a non-profit organization, we rely on the generosity of community members for support; both financially and physically. If you are able to help victims of domestic violence rebuild their lives, please call 254-772-8999 and ask for a Development staff member.

Last year, the FamilyAbuseCenter provided shelter for over 1,050 victims of domestic violence because of generous people like you. Almost 50% of those victims were children. Your gift will help many women and children break the cycle of domestic violence.

Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Family Abuse Center. There are many different areas and programs where your time is needed. Volunteers typically complete an orientation before beginning work at FAC. Some projects and programs require extensive training which is scheduled several times throughout the year. Children’s Volunteer Information:

Volunteers are very important to us here at FAC, especially with the children’s program. We really wouldn’t be able to run our evening groups as smoothly without the help of our fantastic volunteers! Volunteers for the children’s groups are prepared with a brief introduction of domestic violence, and are then provided with further information regarding children and domestic violence, policies and procedures for working with children at the FamilyAbuseCenter, and other helpful information. Volunteers help to ensure that our groups run efficiently by:

Assisting group leader in carrying out plans
Being knowledgeable about positive discipline skills
Being familiar with effects of domestic violence on children
Showing ability to empathize with children
Being familiar with policies and procedures for working with children
Assisting in organizing supplies (and children!)
Helping clean up areas that are used during group, assuring that things are put in their proper labeled place
Assisting children in finding their mothers and returning to them when group is over
Supporting the group facilitator in every way, including discipline, directions, and modeling respect for the children
Completing training with Volunteer Coordinator
Being alert and attentive to children at all times

Legal Advocacy Volunteers

The FAC is seeking mature, responsible adults who care about domestic violence and the families it affects. We need volunteers with a wide variety of skills, interests, and ideas from all occupations, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

The legal advocates will use any amount of time you are able to commit to volunteering. The work is hard, but also gratifying. Family Abuse Center Legal advocates will provide any training needed, as well as stay in contact about tasks and cases.

What do volunteers do?

Assist in issuing 911 cell phones
Provide referrals for medical, counseling, mental health, legal, educational, and financial agencies
Assist in applying for Crime Victim’s Compensation benefits and filing for protective orders
Provide court accompaniment
Create and maintain brochures about domestic violence
Organize community training and provide those training materials
Offer telephone support
Assist in relocating and applying for rental benefits
Assist in obtaining records for U-Visa and VAWA
Maintain monthly statistical records
Create new forms and documents pertaining to clients
